Alzheimers/Alterra

AZ STaR in cooperation with Alterra Clare Bridge of Tempe & the Alzheimer's Association's Desert Southwest Chapter have joined forces to institute a new program for the safe return of Alzheimer Patients.

The TRAIL Program
(Timely Response – Assisting Individuals Lost)
The Disease

Alzheimer's disease robs people of their ability to recognize familiar places and faces. Many cannot remember their own names and addresses. They may become disoriented and lost, in their own neighborhoods or far from home. As many as 7 out of 10 people with Alzheimer's disease will wander off and get lost sometime during the course of their disease, and many do so repeatedly. Each time, their lives are endangered and families worried. In Arizona, this is especially dangerous with our severe heat and desert drought conditions.

The Trail Safe Return Program
  • Educates the professional elder care community and family members regarding the incident rates, risks, and challenges associated with wandering.
  • Provides a timely and safe response to reports of wandering individuals.
  • Engages AZ STaR Trained Search Teams
  • Returns the wandering individual safely to their residence
